LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Taxes need to be high enough to keep city humming along

Everything costs more these days, says letter writer

To the editor,

Re: City unbothered about high taxes, Letters, July 6.

Nobody likes raised taxes, but everything is going up, including all the costs the city faces. Don’t you want bike lanes? Don’t you want EV charging stations? Don’t you want to evolve and be able to survive the crises that are on the way? Even more importantly, shouldn’t we be all contributing to do something about the homeless situation?

Nanaimo needs more and more funds every year. It’s all part of inflation. Nobody likes it, yet here we are. Everything costs more (inflation in the country was up eight per cent).

I wish they could lower taxes, so does everyone. But I don’t want them to degrade our city in order to do so.

Beverley Wood, Nanaimo
