LETTER TO THE EDITOR: City unbothered about high taxes

Lack of thinking and concern for homeowners by our city leaders is inexcusable, says letter writer

To the editor,

Re: Property taxes ‘out of control,’ Letters, June 15.

Yes, I too am disgusted with the events of this tax time. When the geniuses at city hall said we would have an increase of six per cent and then gouged many people with an 11-per cent-plus increase, that was disgusting.

Also, the lack of thinking and concern for homeowners by our city leaders is inexcusable.

Instead of paving the potholes-filled streets, they want to waste a huge amount of tax money and put in a pretty walkway around Departure Bay. Where is the intelligence in that one? Don’t get me started regarding bike paths.

I was shocked when I read my latest property tax bill. My taxes went up nearly $600 this year and I would be willing to bet just about anything that city councillors will pull the same stunt next year – if they are still in office. My guess is that the October election will bring a complete change of leaders. The sooner the better. Too bad we have to wait until October.

Hang on folks – next thing is when we renew our house insurance. I wonder what little surprises will come with that one.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: ‘Exorbitant’ property tax hike hard on residents

To the editor,

Re: Property tax hike hard on residents, Letters, June 15.

This brainwave by the City of Nanaimo is utterly ridiculous. The city should be practising strict control over its spending habits, but no. If they did, there would be no reason whatsoever to increase property taxes by the unrealistic amount of six per cent, adding to the already-rising costs of food and gasoline.

Nanaimo taxpayers are getting hoodwinked and blitzed, yet however are remaining way too silent, therefore allowing the City of Nanaimo to continue with a self-interested flight of fancy. Time for a change.
