To the editor,

Re: Property tax hike hard on residents, Letters, June 8.

Regarding your reader with an 11-per cent tax increase, he got off lightly compared with most people I know. My increase was $1,125, and worked out at 30 per cent. I realize B.C. stands for ‘bring cash,’ but this increase is city councillors out of control. This has to be a joke with planned refunds around the corner, yes? And that is after my so-called homeowner grant. I still don’t have a sidewalk outside my house. If house prices go down can I expect a refund?

Being retired for 20 years this is a big hit for myself and others, so we can expect an increase in pension? Hope you put the same accountant in charge of that job. Get my drift?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: ‘Exorbitant’ property tax hike hard on residents

To the editor,

Re: Property tax hike hard on residents, Letters, June 8.

I’d like to echo others’ frustrations on the increase in my property taxes this year. My property tax bill went from approximately $1,175 to approximately $2,050. The assessed value of my home has gone up of course, but as a first-time home buyer in a volatile market, I feel like I have fallen for a bait and switch.

Every ‘good’ decision I have made as a young person seems to be biting me in the behind. Why am I paying for two bike lanes on the same road in an area of town I cannot afford all while living in a house that is being made even more unaffordable by politicians?

Re: City property tax notices sent out, June 1.

I don’t know who in city hall issued this press release that taxes are going up six per cent this year and average increase of $204 per household, but my taxes went from $3,635 to $4,260, an increase of $625 or a whopping 17.5 per cent on a 50-year-old house in the Country Club area of the city.

I know who I won’t be voting for come October civic elections. Anyone else out there hit like this?

Why are folks complaining about the extra taxes we’re paying? Gold-plated bike lanes don’t pay for themselves.
