The senior A Nanaimo Timbermen scored a tie-breaking goal with two minutes left and won their fifth straight game.
The T-men defeated the Langley Thunder by a 12-9 score in Western Lacrosse Association action on Wednesday, July 13, in the Fraser Valley.
Jerome Thompson’s shot from the top of the circle with the shot clock winding down found a sliver of space between goaltender Frank Scigliano’s shoulder and the cross bar for what turned out to the winning goal, according to a Langley Events Centre press release.
“Hats off to [Nanaimo],” said Rod Jensen, Thunder coach, in the release. “They are athletic, and we knew we had to match their energy and athleticism. We just have to keep battling hard; maybe cut down on a few of our turnovers.”
Zach Manns led the Timbermen offence with three goals and two assists while Will Johansen, Teioshontathe McComber and Adam Wiedemann each scored a pair. Devlin Shanahan stopped 43 of 52 shots for the win.
For the Thunder, Robert Church scored four goals while Curtis Dickson had a goal and four helpers. Scigliano made 44 saves on 56 shots.
GAME ON … The Timbermen (9-5) play the Coquitlam Adanacs (8-4) on Saturday, July 16, on the mainland.
