Nanaimo Timbermen score in overtime for fourth-straight win

T-men defeat Maple Ridge Burrards in WLA lacrosse action

The Nanaimo Timbermen needed overtime, but managed to win their fourth-straight lacrosse game.

The senior A T-men defeated the Maple Ridge Burrards 10-9 in WLA action Sunday, July 10, at Frank Crane Arena.

Nanaimo, after falling behind with three minutes left in the third period, got a game-tying goal from Zach Manns with a little over two minutes left. In three-on-three overtime, Teioshontathe McComber beat his defender and leaped above the crease to score the game-winning goal.

“Those are character wins, for sure,” McComber said. “We didn’t hit the floor with pep in our step, but we still pulled it out and we got the ‘W’ and that’s all that matters right now … These are building blocks.”

He said the game wasn’t pretty, but said the T-men felt like they were going to pull it out.

“You’ve got to come every game with the right intensity and focus and I think tonight that’s what we learned,” said Tewanee Joseph, Timbermen coach.

He said the WLA’s three-on-three, sudden-death overtime suits his team, which he said loves to move the ball and play with speed.

“It speeds up the game and you’ve got to be ready to play at all times. It just heightens everything,” the coach said.

Jon Phillips and Nick Finlay scored two goals each for Nanaimo and Colton Lidstone had a goal and three assists. Charles Claxton made 34 saves.

Nanaimo’s win brings the T-men (8-5) into a tie atop the WLA standings in points, though the first-place Victoria Shamrocks (8-2) and the second-place Coquitlam Adanacs (8-4) both have games in hand.
