Police in Nanaimo are crediting a call from an alert neighbour with foiling the theft of a boat trailer and the seizure of several loaded guns.
According to an RCMP press release, at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22, a witness told police he heard noises in the 600 block of Georgia Avenue and then saw a boat trailer being carried down the alleyway by two unknown persons.
“The police who were on scene within minutes. After a brief struggle, the two suspects were arrested for the theft,” the release noted.
Police searched of one of the suspect’s backpacks and located loaded sawed-off .22 calibre rifles with magazines. A small quantity of suspected crack cocaine exceeding the allowable limit was also found.
Daniel Kipp, 36, of Nanaimo, was taken to the RCMP detachment to await a bail hearing and was charged later the same day with one count of possessing a prohibited weapon. He was held in custody to appear in provincial court in Nanaimo Tuesday, May 23.
The second person who was arrested was released without conditions. The stolen boat trailer was later returned to its rightful owner.
