The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music will showcase the ivory-tickling talents of one of the country’s best concert pianists for its annual fundraising event.

Jane Coop, Order of Canada recipient, and once a member of the UBC faculty of music for 32 years, will display her talents on the Port Theatre stage as a solo recital on Sunday, April 21.

According to a release, she won first prize in CBC’s national radio competition at the age of 19. That win, along with first prize at the Washington International Competition, launched her career.

Coop said her concert will feature the work of well-known composers Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy.

“Some of the pieces that I’m playing are not so well known. I don’t think many people had heard the particular Haydn and Beethoven sonatas that I’m going to play, which makes me very happy because I like to introduce people to music which I think is wonderful,”she said.

Coop will also hold a piano master class at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music.

Tickets to view the master class event on Saturday, April 20, can be purchased at www.ncmusic.ca.

Tickets for the Port Theatre show on Sunday, April 21, can be purchased at www.porttheatre.com.
