Three award-winning musical groups will come together in a celebration of voices and strings.

Since last December, the Nanaimo Youth Choir, Sinclair Singers and Fiddelium have wanted to harmoniously blend their stylings together for a single concert. This Saturday, May 25, they’ll be able to do just that at St. Andrew’s United Church for ‘Collaborate.’

Although not a main theme, the director for the Nanaimo Youth Choir Maria Smith said all of the concert’s programming will have a variety of all-Canadian content. The main emphasis, she said, will be the collaborative nature of music.

“It’s a real sharing of music and sharing of ideas and sharing of the enjoyment and enthusiasm that comes with making music with other people,” Smith said.

As part of the concert’s program, the groups will present three songs together; the concert opener, closer and a composition by Fiddelium’s director Trish Horrocks.

Sharon Sinclair, director of the Sinclair singers, said that while her group’s program will include plenty of choral work, some audience members might recognize a few folk songs as well, such as Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

Smith also said her group will also have a mix of work for their program, including Pussywillows Cat-Tails by Gordon Lightfoot and Rise Up My Love from the Song of Solomon.

Joining the singers and fiddlers during the show will be a guitarist, a flautist and a pianist.

‘Collaborate’ will start at 7 p.m on Saturday at St. Andrew’s United Church. Those interested can get tickets from members of the Nanaimo Youth Choir, or at the door, for $20. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
