A Nanaimo youth volunteer group will return to Maffeo Sutton Park this week to collect Coats for Christmas.

Volunteers with Youth 20/20 Can Nanaimo will set up at the Lions Pavilion in the park to gather coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and other gently used warm articles of clothing for the annual charity drive.

As with previous years, the donations will then be handed over to Salvation Army’s New Hope Centre in Nanaimo for distribution.

Tara Feindel, a volunteer coordinator with the organization, expects to have 10 volunteers for both days of the drive and said they’ll be looking for an assortment of clothing of all sizes and styles.

“We always get for men and women [clothing] but we’d like kids’ stuff as well,” she said.

Last year, Feindel said they received approximately 1,000 articles of clothing including 700 coats.

“We always get a lot of donations, which is great,” she said, adding that the grouup always hopes to collect more donations than the previous year.

Volunteers will accept donations at Maffeo Sutton Park, from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, and from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17. Hot chocolate, coffee and chocolate chip cookies will be available by donation.
