Wrestlers earn national medals

Nanaimo high school students put in good performance at the Canadian Wrestling Champions held in Windsor, Ont. last weekend, earning three medals and a host of solid finishes.

Dover Bay Secondary School’s Ryan Yewchin won a silver medal for his effort in the juvenile division at 86 kilograms.

Dover’s sister act of Katie and Kimberly van Hest brought home bronze medals for wins in the 82 kg juvenile division and 70 kg cadet division, respectively.

The match was Katie van Hest’s final competition in high school, making up for a fourth place finish at nationals last year.

Other Dover competitors included Daniel Fleury in a two-way tie for eighth in the 63 kg cadet division, Grace Tuck, ninth as a 60 kg cadet and Nathan Valsangkar, 13th in the 63 kg juvenile division.

John Barsby Community Secondary School’s Jordan Kuziek earned a fourth place finish in the juvenile division at 115 kilograms and Nanaimo District Secondary School’s Kyle Clare earned a sixth place finish in the cadet division at 76 kg.
