Nanaimo’s wheelchair curlers received some instruction and inspiration.

The Nanaimo Curling Centre hosted a wheelchair curling workshop last month in partnership with Curl B.C., bringing in Paralympian and world champion Sonja Gaudet as well as provincial development coach Karen Watson over from the mainland.

Nine wheelchair curlers participated, including two newcomers to the sport, noted Corrine Jensen, Curl B.C.’s Vancouver Island wheelchair curling representative, in a write-up.

“On the ice at the same time as the senior mixed league, there were many interested curlers and on-lookers as to the level of support for the wheelchair curlers in our club,” she wrote. “It certainly raised the grassroots profile of the game a little more.”

The Nanaimo Curling Centre will host the Curl B.C. provincial wheelchair championships Jan. 25-27.
