Volunteer honoured at gala

There was a Nanaimo component to the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence’s Celebration of Women in Sport awards.

Held April 3 in Victoria, the gala luncheon honoured women’s achievement in sport highlighting the significant contribution that girls and women of all ages play in the world of sports.

The inaugural Women in Sport Awards recognized women who have made an exceptional contribution to sport as a coach, builder, volunteer or athlete.

Nanaimo’s Madeline Sherry was named Volunteer of the Year for more than 20 years working with visually-impaired lawn bowlers in the Harbour City and throughout B.C. and Canada.

Other WIS award winners included Krista Thompson, Coach of the Year; Tracy Terry, Sport Builder; and Jessica Vliegenthart, Athlete of the Year.
