Dover Bay Dolphins hosting senior AAAA girls’ B.C. championships Dec. 9-11

The highest level of high school girls’ volleyball is filling gymnasiums in Nanaimo this week.

Dover Bay Secondary School is hosting the senior AAAA girls’ provincial championships today, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Dec. 11. Nanaimo District and John Barsby secondary schools are also hosting some pool-play matches.

The Dover Bay Dolphins senior girls won the Vancouver Island championship this fall, defeating NDSS in the semifinals and then Claremont in the final.

Dover Bay coach David Nelson said he purposely planned a packed schedule for the team this season because of COVID-19 unknowns, so it turned out that the team was busy in its return to the court in 2021. It’s not every year that a team gets to finish the season with provincial championships in their home gym, so Dover will try to make the most of the experience.

“Especially for the Grade 12s, not having [a season] last year, this is a big deal. For the Grade 11s, for their growth looking towards their Grade 12 year, it’s exciting,” Nelson said.

Dover is the tournament’s No. 4 seed and there are some powerhouse opponents in the brackets, with the South Delta Sun Devils seeded No. 1, the Riverside Rapids ranked No. 2 and the Kelowna Owls at No. 3.

Dover Bay began the tourney Thursday with a 25-15, 25-14 loss to the Seaquam Seahawks.

GAME ON … The senior AAAA girls’ provincial final will be Saturday, Dec. 11, at 3:15 p.m. at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym.
