The championship reign is over for the VIU Mariners women’s volleyball team, but they got to end things off with a week of Canada’s best college volleyball in their home gym.

The Vancouver Island University Mariners finished fourth at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships this past weekend. The M’s won two matches and lost two matches – both against the same Humber Hawks team – to finish just outside the medals at the four-day tournament.

VIU lost the bronze-medal match to Humber in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24.

The M’s women also lost to the Hawks on the first night of the tourney, falling in four sets by scores of 24-26, 25-14, 25-22, 25-21.

VIU responded by defeating Les Rouges de l’Université do Saint-Boniface in four sets, 25-15, 25-16, 24-26, 25-15, then sweeping the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings by scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-19.

The Mariners’ star outside hitter Jane Lytvynenko, who was chosen the CCAA Player of the Year on the eve of the tournament, was selected as a first-team all-star and her teammate Cassidy Kitchen was a second-team all-star.

The Lakeland Rustlers won the national championship, defeating the Camosun Chargers in straight sets in the final.

Meanwhile, the VIU Mariners men also fought their way to the bronze-medal match at their national championship tournament hosted by Humber College in Toronto. The M’s men lost to the Briercrest Clippers in the bronze-medal match, 25-22, 27-25, 25-19.

VIU’s Lucas Torres was chosen a first-team all-star.

Camosun defeated Humber to win the men’s national title.
