VIU Mariners going for gold tonight at basketball nationals

Mariners to face NAIT Ooks in CCAA championship game

The VIU Mariners are going to get a chance to go for gold in their home gym.

Vancouver Island University’s women’s basketball team defeated the Dawson Blues in Saturday’s semifinals to advance to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship game against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks on Sunday, March 27, in the VIU gym.

VIU beat Dawson 76-72 in another comeback after trailing by seven points at halftime. The M’s closed the gap in the third quarter and were down by two points going into the fourth.

Harriette Mackenzie led the Mariners with 23 points and nine rebounds, Kayla Gregory was chosen player of the game with 13 points, and Shayce Johnston added 12.

For the Blues, Aicha Dia scored 22 points and Amanda Cruickshank and Hans Sarah Baily each had 12.

The Ooks qualified for the national final earlier in the night, beating the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics 84-72.
