The VIU Mariners came up with quite a few hits on opening day, but allowed way too many to win.

Vancouver Island University’s baseball club was swept by the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs on opening day of the season Saturday at Serauxmen Stadium, losing 10-4 and 14-1.

The Mariners had nine hits in the first game and scored four runs in the seventh inning to make it a 5-4 game, but couldn’t keep it close over the final innings.

Bryan O’Hara, Liam Ballance and Lucas Galloway each had two hits in the early game. Austin Gurr suffered the loss on the mound as he threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out eight.

In the second game, Matt Stevenson was the starting pitcher in defeat.

The Mariners continue Canadian College Baseball Conference play Sunday and Monday (April 2-3) with home games against the Okanagan Coyotes. Game times are 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday.
