Morgan Hackman’s hockey future is taking him to Vancouver Island.
The 16-year-old forward from Vernon has become the first addition to the B.C. Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers for the 2024-25 season.
Hackman brings a formidable combination of size, skill, and talent to the Clippers.
Standing at six-foot-three-inches tall, weighing 216 pounds, Hackman has been making a significant impact so far in the 2023-24 season. He has four goals and six assists in 15 games with the RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna U18 team.
“Morgan has great size and possesses all the attributes to be a power forward in this league,”said Nanaimo head coach Colin Birkas. “With his size and strength, the only way to get a player like him is early, and develop him along the way. He’s the type of player that, in a year or so, no one would give up. He has the chance to be a force in this league sooner than later.”
His performance to date has already caught the attention of some NCAA schools.
Hackman has a historical connection to the BCHL and the Vernon Lakers’ powerhouse teams from 1988-92.
His grandfather is former Lakers team owner Mel Lis, whose clubs won four BCHL titles in five years, and appeared in four consecutive Centennial Cup Canadian Junior A Championship tournaments from 1989-92. The Lakers won back-to-back national championships in 1990 and 1991.
