Timbermen add tough defender

The Nanaimo Timbermen are bringing a former fan favourite back to the city.

The senior A Western Lacrosse Association club acquired hard-nosed defender Trevor Gains from the Coquitlam Adanacs this week in exchange for speedy transition player Russell Thomas.

Gains, a 6-foot-2, 210 pounder, played all 16 regular-season games for the Adanacs during the 2010 season, tallying 39 penalty minutes. He graduated from the Nanaimo Timbermen junior A program, where he compiled 69 penalty minutes in 16 games in 2009.

According to a Timbermen press release, Thomas, a student at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, had requested a trade to a mainland team.

The Timbermen start the 2011 WLA season on May 13 on the road against the Burnaby Lakers and Nanaimo’s home opener is May 22 when it plays the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
