NDSS playing at provincials

Nanaimo District Secondary School's senior AA girls' soccer team is travelling to Penticton to begin provincials on Thursday (May 29).

The NDSS Islanders will bring their team spirit and strong soccer skills to provincials this week.

Nanaimo District Secondary School's senior AA girls' soccer team is travelling to Penticton to begin its B.C. championship tournament on Thursday (May 29).

The Isles came third at Islands earlier this month in Victoria, defeating Gulf Islands in the third-place game to earn a provincials berth for a second-straight year.

"We were consistent and focused," said Mikaela Hardy, the team's coach. "If we keep playing the way we're playing, I think we have a really good chance at provincials."

She said the Islanders are a well-rounded team, defensive-minded but with some good goal scorers. The group also works well together.

“We just try to keep good spirits out there and each play our hardest, and when we play our hardest we play extremely well,” said Hardy.

The coach said the girls held a hotdog sale and bake sale over the past two weeks and there is also a fundraising website that can be found at this link. Hardy pointed out that a lot of school soccer players don't get a chance to ever reach provincials, so the Islanders will enjoy it this week.

"For the Grade 12s, this is their last year so we want to make it super special for them," Hardy said.
