NDSS ninth, Wellington 10th at provincials

The NDSS Islanders lost only one game at provincial championships.

Nanaimo District Secondary School’s senior AAA boys’ basketball team finished ninth at the B.C. championships last week in Langley, defeating the Wellington Wildcats 85-49 in the ninth-place game Saturday.

Anders Cederberg, a tournament first-team all-star, scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Nanaimo District, Winston Gardiner scored 17 points and Owen Morrison tallied 16.

NDSS started the tourney with a 72-58 loss to Robert Bateman, but then beat Brookswood 83-57 and got past Duchess Park 74-40.

Wellington began provincials with a 71-52 loss to St. Thomas More, but beat Carihi 78-64 and then defeated Maple Ridge 69-60 to set up the final-day matchup against NDSS.

Rick Hansen beat South Kamloops 69-63 in the senior AAA boys' final.
