A 15-year-old golfer from Nanaimo drove his way to the top spot, winning the NextGen Fall Series Western Championship.
Matthew Wilson beat out dozens of young amateurs in Golden, B.C., the last week of September, besting Richmond’s Alex Zhang by three strokes. With a two-under par lead for most of the last 36 of 54 holes, Wilson wrapped up the competition with a tournament two-under 214.
The Wellington Secondary School student, who golfs out of Nanaimo Golf Club, finished his final round with a 72, and prior to that, shot an impressive four-under 68.
The NextGen Fall Series Western Championship, fuelled by Journie Rewards, is an initiative by Golf Canada to showcase the talents of young golfers at the highest level.
Wilson, along with runners-up Alex Zhang and Ryan Vest will next compete nationally in the 2023 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, presented by BDO in a location yet to be determined.
Wilson is known for having golfed 130 straight days during the early months of the pandemic.
