This season’s Nanaimo NightOwls players will need somewhere else to be when they’re not in the dugout or on the road on bus trips.
The city’s West Coast League baseball team is in need of host families for several players, as the season gets underway next week.
NightOwls general manager Jim Swanson said the housing crisis and summer hotel rates limit options for accommodations at this time of year, so the team is dependent on billet families.
“They do end up being family,” he said. “I already know, from our first year, there are people that are staying in very close contact with the players that they had in their homes.”
The WCL season starts June 2 and continues until Aug. 6. The NightOwls players are college scholarship athletes who are baseball-focused, and will spend half the summer on road trips. When they aren’t at the ball park, though, they might appreciate being taken for a day of hiking or boating, for example.
“Those things are a big, big part of the experience of being in Nanaimo,” Swanson said.
