Baseball season is still a long way off, but the Nanaimo NightOwls are getting started now on putting a roster together for next summer.

The city’s West Coast League baseball team announced that five veterans have committed to return to the team in 2024: infielders Aaron Marsh and Wylie Waters, catcher Michael Easter and pitchers Nathan Buchan and Jake Fleury.

Waters, Easter and Marsh were all in the top five in batting average on the team last year, hitting .317, .315 and .287, respectively. Fleury led the pitching staff in wins and was second in ERA at 2.05, and Buchan was third on the staff in innings pitched.

“This is a great group, committed athletes who work hard and are classy people,” said Jim Swanson, NightOwls general manager. “What’s fun for us, too, is we are close to confirming other returning players, something our fans will be excited about. Nanaimo is becoming a summer development destination because of our coaching staff, the atmosphere at Serauxmen, and how the community has jumped on board with the organization.”

The NightOwls will start the WCL season on the road against the Kelowna Falcons on May 31 and will play their home opener against the Cowlitz Black Bears on June 4.
