Nanaimo high school track athletes break records, win Island titles

Track and field athletes from Nanaimo high schools had record-setting and championship-calibre performances last week.

Dozens of local athletes had top-three finishes at the Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championship at Rotary Bowl stadium May 18-19.

Sonya Urbanowicz of Dover Bay Secondary was one of the record-setters, as she established a meet record for senior girls in pole vault with a 3.6-metre leap.

In Grade 8 competition, Nanaimo District Secondary runner Ava Gauthier set a record in the 3,000m race with a time of 11 minutes, 37.76 seconds. Another NDSS athlete, Owen Harbo, set a meet record in discus with a 34.34m throw.

Island champions in senior girls’ competition include Urbanowicz in pole vault and 200m, Serenna Drake of NDSS in shot put and discus. Among senior boys, Nate Paris of NDSS is an Island champion in the 100m dash and 200m, as well as in long jump after he out-leaped the rest of the field by more than a metre. Benedek Horvath of Wellington Secondary won the Island championship in triple jump.

200m - Nate Paris, NDSS, first; Stirling Henry, NDSS, third.

400m - Jayden Watson, John Barsby, third.

800m - Jake Putz, John Barsby, third.

3,000m - Dylan Barberie, NDSS, second.

400m hurdles - Benedek Horvath, Wellington, second.

2,000m steeplechase - Mateo Moore, Dover Bay, second.

High jump - Ches Rednour-Bruckman, John Barsby, third.

Long jump - Nate Paris, NDSS, first. (won by more than a metre)

Triple jump - Benedek Horvath, Wellington, first.

Discus - Ben Martin, Dover Bay, second.

Team - NDSS, third.

SENIOR GIRLS

200m - Sonya Urbanowicz, Dover Bay, first.

4x100m relay - Dover Bay, second.

Pole vault - Sonya Urbanowicz, Dover Bay, first.

Shot put - Serenna Drake, NDSS, first.
