Nanaimo gymnasts put forward another championship season

The judges’ scores are in and Nanaimo gymnastics had another strong season on the vault, the bars, the beam, the floor and the trampoline.

Athletes from Nanaimo Gymnastics School and Vancouver Island Premier Gymsports competed at several high-calibre events this spring.

At the Gymnastics B.C. championships March 28-30 at the PNE Forum, Blake Fudge of Nanaimo Gymnastics School won the all-around provincial championship in her Level 7F category and teammate Gianna Phillips won the all-around provincial championship in the Level 6D division.

In event-specific competition, Tatum DeSchutter of Nanaimo Gymnastics School won the floor championship for Level 9, Fudge of NGS won the bars provincial title for Level 7 and Abi Harris of VIP Gymsports placed third on the floor in Level 7.

In trampoline and tumbling, VIP Gymsports celebrated numerous medal results. Cylus Tisserand finished first in tumbling among Level 1 men, and first on the double mini and first on the trampoline in Level 2 12-and-under competition. Liam Kennedy was first on the double mini in Level 1 13-and-over, Linus Miller was first on the double mini in Level 1 11-12-year-olds, and Carter Mills was first on the double mini for Level 1 10-and-under.

At the Elite Canada competition in Calgary from April 4-7, Taylor Pillinger of VIP Gymsports was first in senior women’s tumbling and Owen Harbo from VIP was first on the senior men’s double mini.

Another highlight of the season was NGS athlete Emmelyn Szopa making Team B.C. for the Western Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Langley from April 18-20.

Level 6F - Chyles Washburn, VIP, first, beam, third, floor.

Level 6H - Edie Kenny, VIP, first, beam, first, floor, second, all-around.

Level 6A - Camryn Byrne, NGS, second, bars.

Level 6B - Teegan Oxbury, NGS, second, vault.

Level 6D - Gianna Phillips, NGS, first, vault, first, bars, second, beam, first, all-around.

Level 7F - Blake Fudge, NGS, first, bars, third, beam, third, floor, first, all-around.

Level 7G - Hazel Techen, VIP, first, beam.

Level 7A - Tabitha Carson, NGS, third, floor; Isabelle Servais, NGS, third, bars.

Level 7D - Abi Harris, VIP, first, floor.

Level 8B - Brooklynn Cox, VIP, first, bar.

Level 8D - Emmelyn Szopa, NGS, second, bars.

Level 9 senior trials - Tatum DeSchutter, NGS, second, floor.

Level 9 senior A - Tatum DeSchutter, NGS, first, floor.

Level 7 finals - Blake Fudge, NGS, first, bars; Abi Harris, VIP, third, floor.
