The mosquito A Nanaimo Pirates, playing at their home field, were able to make it through regionals and earn a place in provincials.
The Pirates finished second at the regional championships, held Saturday and Sunday at Sid Clark Gyro Park. Victoria went undefeated to claim one provincials berth, and the tournament format saw Nanaimo and Oceanside then play in the final game of the tourney with one more berth on the line. Nanaimo won with ease, 15-2.
“The kids played well. We were super excited,” said Mike Peters, manager of the mosquito A Pirates. “They hit the ball, they caught the ball, they threw the ball. That’s our mantra. Forget about the little things and just play as good as you can.”
Provincial championships will be held in Cloverdale starting Thursday, Aug. 2, and Peters said there will be strong competition there.
“The Victoria team is a very strong team from the Island; we consider ourselves a very strong team from the Island. It’s going to be tough,” he said.
