League wants to sign free agents

They might not hit the ball the hardest or circle the basepaths the fastest, but they still like playing ball.

The Nanaimo Adult Recreational Slo-pitch League is once again planning registration for the coming season.

The league is for women 45 years old and up, or men 50 and over, and is non-competitive. Nobody keeps stats, and they sometimes don’t even keep score.

“A lot of people ask, ‘Well, did you win?’ I say, ‘I don’t know,’” said Mike Moore, the league’s past-president. “It’s all friendly.”

Everyone gets to play and gets to take at-bats. If a player has trouble running to first base or beyond, a teammate can handle the baserunning.

Games go at the McGirr Sports Fields in north Nanaimo every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m., but players can register to play just once a week if they prefer.

Registration starts Tuesday (April 19) at 9:15 a.m. and will be followed by a pickup game.

The league runs until the end of September.
