The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen needed a win, and they got it.
The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team (4-8) defeated the Burnaby Lakers 12-5 on Saturday on the mainland.
“They worked hard, they played well and they were totally deserving of the 12-5 …spread in the win,” said Dave Bremner, the team’s coach.
The junior Timbermen were coming off a frustrating loss to the last-placed Port Coquitlam Saints the previous weekend. So over the course of a week, the Timbermen managed to find some answers.
“We changed up our system, we had some good practices, we had some positive stuff happen and we built on some of the things that we’re capable of doing,” said Bremner.
Joey Fendick scored a hat trick to lead the offence, Kyle Hofer had two goals and two assists and Ethan Garland and Quinn Smith also had a pair of goals each. Stu Mills, Ryan Sage and McGregor Johnston were the other scorers. Junior B call-up Ross Radcliffe also impressed Bremner.
Goalie Devon Winter made 35 saves as the Lakers outshot the T-men 40-39.
GAME ON … The Timbermen visit PoCo (1-12) on Saturday (June 18), then host the defending national champions, the undefeated Coquitlam Adanacs (12-0) on Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. That game is a 5 p.m. faceoff.
