High schools host hoops championships

Wellington is hosting the senior AA boys’ Island championship and Dover Bay is hosting the senior AAA girls’ Islands.

High school hoops teams are in the hunt for Island championships.

Wellington Secondary School is hosting the senior AA boys’ Island championship and Dover Bay Secondary School is hosting the senior AAA girls’ Islands. Both tourneys get underway Thursday (Feb. 21).

In boys’ action, Wellington plays Shawnigan at 2 p.m., Woodlands faces Lambrick Park at 3:45 p.m. and Nanaimo District plays St. Mike’s at 7:15 p.m. The Island championship game will be played Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

At Dover, the Dolphins girls play Mt. Doug at 5 p.m. Tournament organizers hope fans will make it out to the school gym, as the modest admission fee helps cover tournament costs. The Island championship goes Saturday at 7 p.m.

"Nanaimo sports fans are some of the best and most knowledgeable basketball fans in the province and are welcome to attend and watch some excellent matchups," noted an event press release.

The Wellington Wildcats are the only Nanaimo team that made it to senior AA girls' provincials, which are being played at St. Mike's in Victoria.

Dover's senior AAA boys start playoffs Friday (Feb. 22) in Duncan at the North Island championships with a matchup against G.P. Vanier.
