Nanoose Bay high jumper Mike Mason leaped all the way back to the Olympics last summer, and Sport B.C. is recognizing the achievement.
Sport B.C. announced that Mason is this year’s winner of the Harry Jerome Comeback Award for perseverance.
Mason’s ankle injury in 2010 might have been career-ending, but he recovered, got back all his jumping height, plus more, and finished eighth at the London Olympics.
“It takes a certain level of passion and drive as an athlete to overcome the obstacles [he] has faced…” said Rob Newman, president of Sport B.C., in a press release. “Through his power, conviction and dedication, he has returned in full form to be a top contender in his sport.”
Mason will be presented with his award March 7 at the 47th annual Sport B.C. Athlete of the Year Awards.
