Vancouver Island University’s men’s and women’s soccer teams stayed in the thick of things in the standings with another win each on the weekend.

The men’s Mariners defeated the Kwantlen Eagles 1-0 on Saturday at Merle Logan Field before falling 3-1 to the Douglas Royals the next day at Merle Logan.

The women’s M’s lost 1-0 to Kwantlen before shutting out Douglas 2-0.

Mateo Kostering scored the game winner the first day for VIU’s men. On Sunday, the home team came out strong and Keegan Lang scored on a header to give his team the lead, but the Royals scored twice before halftime. The M’s were awarded a free kick late against the Royals and brought everyone up to press for the equalizer, but the Douglas keeper sent the play the other way and the visitors added some insurance.

The Mariners women had their chances against the Eagles on Saturday, said coach Anup Kang in a press release, but Kwantlen’s keeper kept the home team off the scoreboard.

On Sunday, the M’s women found more success. Moira Brown got things started, scoring on a rebound off a corner kick. Jillian Kelly chipped the Royals keeper for a second-half goal.

GAME ON … VIU’s soccer teams continue their homestand this coming weekend (Sept. 28-29) against UBC-Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University, respectively. The women host UBC-O at 1 p.m. Saturday at Merle Logan Field with the men’s match to follow at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the ladies' game is at noon; the men go at 2 p.m.
