The city’s fastball players are on their game so far this season, and they need to be – the league is pretty competitive.

The Nanaimo Senior Men’s Fastball League features five teams this year and early on there’s a four-way race for first place.

“It’s a pretty even league now,” said Todd Belton, league president. “It’s pretty spread out, all the talent.”

On Tuesday night at Pioneer Park, Palladian defeated Baker 9-0. Gregg Joryenson and Jeremy Slater were both 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs each and Kirkland Lum threw a two-hit shutout.

Games are usually Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday evenings at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park and Thursdays at the Wheatsheaf sports complex.

The teams are looking forward to the B.C. Cup tournament in mid-July at the Wheatsheaf fields. The tourney will involve 10-12 teams, including an international entry from Australia.
