Cross-country championships attract high-calibre athletes

The B.C. Cross-Country Championships in Nanaimo were filled with ultra competitive racing.

The Nanaimo Track and Field Club hosted the event at Beban Park on Saturday (Oct. 29).

The championships drew some high-profile runners including Rachel Cliff, Lucas Bruchet and others.

Lisa Brooking, representing Trinity Western University, won the senior women’s six-kilometre race in 20:17 and Ross Proudfoot of Sudbury won the senior men’s 8km in 24:10.

Local youths Kynan Shurniak, Jayden Watson and Madison Heisterman had top-five finishes in their respective divisions. Shurniak was second among 10-and-under boys, finishing his 2km race in 8:18; Watson was fourth among 12-and-under boys, running 3km in 10:32; and Heisterman was fifth-fastest among 17-and-under girls, racing 4km in 15:13.
