Wetlands will be gone forever

The City of Nanaimo, by issuing these permits, condones the destruction of our trees and wetlands.

To the Editor,

Re: City won’t step in to save land, Oct. 10.

Wake up Nanaimo – your city building department has issued permits for homes in Linley Point development and units adjoining this property in Linley Valley West. Way too much density for this area. Who are these developers targeting to buy these new homes?

The hospital cannot support this growth, it is on overload now.

The City of Nanaimo, by issuing these permits, condones the destruction of our trees and wetlands. Once the wetlands are gone, with roads down the centre of them, they are gone forever. One beaver pond has already been destroyed and a road runs down the centre of it.

Ecosystems act as natural reservoirs, treatment plants that remove elements and biochemicals, and stormwater management. Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. They clean the atmosphere.

By allowing developers to trap animals, the City of Nanaimo has OK’d the killing of wildlife that live in this habitat. These animals die a slow, painful death. This needs to change.

I appeal to all religious people to help save all of God’s little creatures for they have no one to speak for them.

Please, call city council, call the mayor’s office, sign petitions. Save our wetlands.
