To the Editor,
I read ICBC’s Nanaimo crash site report with great interest. It said that between four intersections, we had 220 accidents or more per year or more than one per week per intersection. I then did a little research and found that these same four intersections had the highest for a number of years now. It seemed odd to me that Nanaimo city council, so concerned about the safety in Harewood and the effects of the Colliery dam, would not have made improvements to these intersections.
We know for sure that these life-threatening accidents are happening at each of the intersections, every week. So the question is why has there been nothing done? Is it because intersection safety is not one of those things that you could not vote against in an election year?
It is time for council to spend our tax dollars on projects that make the present safer, which is a much better legacy than high taxes and empty conference centres.
