Oceans should be protected

When do we stop creating problems and learn to live more in harmony with nature?

To the Editor,

With reports of sunfish and scallops dying off our coasts, can there be a link to the radiation? Or is it the acidification of carbon drawn into the ocean? Or, the culmination of many human practices?

Should seaweed harvesting on the coast be allowed in the Bowser area? On the one hand, is the seaweed contaminated? On the other hand, does the seaweed not need to be protected from wide-scale harvesting? Should a government be allowed to permit toxic dumping in the Shawnigan watershed? Should the Raven Coal Mine in the Comox Valley be given the chance to pollute our fresh water sources that also make their way into the ocean? What do incinerators do to add to the pollution of our oceans?

The more we interfere with nature, the more problems seem to be generated. When will we learn to see the larger picture, that what we do to nature we do to ourselves? When do we stop creating problems and learn to live more in harmony with nature? When do we learn that our bodies and nature have an intrinsic wisdom that we ignore at our peril?

When do we get to relax in the knowledge that we do not have to increasingly spend time trying to save our environment, and get on with truly creating a better world?
