LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Rats are running rampant in Nanaimo

Unless rats are controlled, city’s rat problem is likely to end very badly, says letter writer

To the editor,

Recently I have noticed rats in my neighbourhood. No doubt this is the result of so many Nanaimo residents leaving their ‘rat buffet’ garbage cans outside unsecured.

The rats are more than 30 centimetres nose to tail so it’s unlikely domesticated cats will take these beasts on even if they were allowed to run loose in the community.

Will it take an outbreak of rat-borne diseases, or attacks on small children, before city officials start to address this problem? Some people may find these critters cute, but unless they are controlled this is likely to end very badly.
