To the editor,

After an appointment in Victoria and driving home I took the old highway entering south Nanaimo. I’ve lived here my whole life and the condition of Nicol Street as you drive toward downtown has become unsightly. I grew up in this area and it never looked like it does now.

Every town along my drive was nicely maintained until you enter Nanaimo. This is what visitors to our city get to see first as they enter our city limits. Every fence is different, falling down, some are missing. I’m embarrassed that our city council has done nothing to fix this and improve the look along the main road entering into downtown. The city has allowed this area to look as it does and choose not to do anything to make it look presentable for us who live here and the visitors who visit our city. It’s time to do something about it. Build one solid style of fencing that is all the same and make it look better.

Take responsibility. Make it beautiful for not only those who visit but for everyone who lived in this area and who has to drive by and see how the city just let it get to this point.

Lynn Whitaker, Nanaimo
