Re: Seven years later, Nanaimo’s animal trapping bylaw still isn’t approved, Feb. 27.
Thank you for this story. Most people are not aware that fur trapping still exists and under provincial regulations, lethal traps can be set just 200 metres from a dwelling, including a home or school. Warning signs are not required.
In addition to Nanaimo, there are other cities including Sechelt, White Rock and Surrey who are waiting for approval from B.C. Forests Minister Doug Donaldson to regulate trapping in their jurisdictions.
Too many pets and people have been harmed by traps, and the B.C. government has done nothing. B.C. municipalities clearly need the ability to manage this issue themselves.
Fur markets have almost disintegrated, but the government still caters to this tiny special interest group. Why? Are there no elected officials who will take on this file, and commit to making public safety and animal welfare a priority?
