To the editor,

Re: Alternative approval process for fire station rebuild underway, April 3.

It’s interesting that Nanaimo council wants to borrow $17 million to build a $17-million fire hall. However, during the referendum for the event centre it was claimed by council that the annual $5.4-million carrying costs associated with that project, could be found without increasing taxes. If that’s true council should only have to borrow $12 million for the fire hall and only for three years. By then, the money not being used to pay for the event centre, should easily have paid off this new expenditure.

Just because a new fire hall is a noble endeavour, let’s not blindly support the borrowing of $17 million without questioning the costing figures and the amount that needs to be financed.
