To the editor,
I would like to apologize to all the local restaurants and fast-food eateries. We can’t afford your prices any longer. With inflation and rise in food costs, we can’t afford to ‘eat out’ anymore.
We used to go out once a week and treat ourselves. Now, with fast food/drive-thru costing approximately $40-50 for burgers and fries, and a decent sit-down dinner about $120-140 for two of us, these are only luxuries that we dream of.
My husband recently retired, and I still make a good wage ($200 before taxes) but we can’t justify using one day’s wages to eat out. We haven’t even factored in a tip yet. (There’s no way we would even contemplate the suggested 30 per cent on increased menu prices, let alone 20 per cent). So we will continue to feel badly for all those restaurants that we used to frequent, and all the servers who won’t be getting a reasonable tip, until such time that prices come down again. And like that’s ever going to happen?
