To the editor,

Re: City curious about its authority to limit natural gas hookups, May 24.

Rather than limiting use of natural gas, the city and province should embrace natural gas as part of the complete human life cycle.

Let’s begin with human excrement. Recently, a B.C. Knowledge Network program showed how an English city collects raw sewage and transforms it into marketable natural gas as well as rich compost to help grow vegetables. The natural gas thus collected is distributed through existing pipelines for heating and cooking. Secondly, Nanaimo has a garbage problem. Instead of hiding the garbage below a thin layer of dirt where it releases methane natural gas into the atmosphere, we should burn the garbage at high temperatures in a closed-loop system to produce electricity. Note, methane is a worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
