LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Citizens deserve tax refund instead of another increase

Letter writer tried to vote out councillors he thought were most responsible for ‘excessive’ tax hikes

To the editor,

I see the councillors have their sight set on raising property taxes again.

At the last vote on councillor preferences, I isolated those I thought responsible for these excessive taxes, only to find out that after researching the new councillors it would appear to be a main criteria in their resumés as to how many varied committees they happened to serve on. As you can see I had great difficulty selecting a new group. I voted but also understand why most of Nanaimo did not.

My tax increase was over 30 per cent last year, the least you could have done is spread it over three years if you couldn’t get it right over the prior three-year period. I expect to see a maximum increase of three percent this year if not a refund as house prices decreased and inflation takes away our hard-earned money. Councillors should remember they work for us, not various government bodies. They should stop these expensive prestige projects and concentrate on maintaining the basics. Give us a break.
