Re: Councillor opposes garbage incinerator, Dec. 3.
Kudos to Nanaimo councillor George Anderson for realizing what more mature heads on council apparently can’t, that if there was a dollar to be made in burning garbage it’s unlikely Vancouver would be interested in barging it across the Salish Sea.
Incineration releases, for every three tons of garbage, 50,000 cubic metres of smoke laden with heavy metals including lead, cadmium, mercury, as well as dioxins, fuerans and other plastic poisons. Supporters of incineration apparently don’t have any friends with asthma. Rest assured, if this plan goes ahead, they will.
Then there’s the solid waste left over, about a ton for every three tons of garbage. As it’s unlikely Vancouver will be willing to accept it back, some Vancouver Island watershed will be expected to absorb that bunch of poisons.
Perhaps each incineration supporter will be happy to accept a 50-gallon drum to dispose of on their own property each month.
