The Nanaimo News Bulletin’s Best of the City survey is happening now. Vote by Aug. 1 for a chance to win a $250 gas card courtesy Mid Island Co-op.

This is the time of year that gives us warm, fuzzy feelings about the place we live. That’s because it’s time to think about the best things about Nanaimo, and vote for them in the News Bulletin’s Best of the City survey.

We launched the survey one week ago and have already garnered thousands of votes on our website, so it’s a promising start as far as reader participation.

For those who may not have voted before, Best of the City is a comprehensive reader survey about favourite restaurants, shops and services, as well as favourite things to see and do. You can click your favourite from a list, and if it’s not on the list, you can write it in.

Best of the City is partly a celebration of our local business community, and as we fill out the survey each year it’s interesting to consider how our day-to-day transactions brightened many of our days over the past 12 months. More likely than not, we happened upon some good deals, had pleasant interactions with shopkeepers, and discovered new favourite dishes. Those are exactly the sorts of positive experiences we hope readers will keep in mind as they click their way through the Best of the City survey.

The questionnaire is admittedly a long one. It’s a testament to the way Nanaimo’s business community continues to grow – we’re a big enough city to have pretty much everything we need, yet we’re still a small enough town to ensure that service with a smile matters.

Your votes are not only appreciated, they’re absolutely critical to the success of this project. More total votes means it takes more votes to earn the title of Best of the City. That makes for a more meaningful achievement for winning businesses, and it also makes the Best of the City list a more trustworthy and valuable resource for readers.

As extra incentive to vote, we’re giving away a random draw prize of a $250 gas card courtesy Mid Island Co-op. The survey will be accessible at www.nanaimobulletin.com/contests until Aug. 1.

So vote thoughtfully, vote with warm, fuzzy feelings, and let us know what’s the Best of the City.
