Decision gets plan process on track

Re: Waterfront highrises possible under latest city compromise, April 7.

To the Editor,

Re: Waterfront highrises possible under latest city compromise, April 7.

To be more accurate, council gutted the so-called neighbourhood plan for Newcastle and Brechin Hill, and restored conditions that were in place before the planning process started.

It was a decision I applaud.

The planning process went off the rails soon after it began.

Some of the fundamental requirements for legitimate and good planning were not adhered to by city staff. Council’s timely intervention prevented a much more damaging train wreck.

I also believe that council reinforced the notion that changes to the Brechin waterfront will require a considerable amount of co-operation between the property owners on the hill and the property owners on the waterfront.

After observing some of the discussions that went on after the decision, I am cautiously optimistic that a change for the better along the waterfront will happen.

What I witnessed on Monday went a long way toward increasing my pride in this city, and restoring my faith in the resiliency of its people.

Council did a good thing, and I think a brighter future for all of us will be the result.
