Contentious dog issue another head-scratcher

Re: Patrols target unleashed dogs, March 22.

To the Editor,

Re: Patrols target unleashed dogs, March 22.

Wow. If an alien read the article on patrols targeting unleashed dogs, they would possibly suspect the city is dealing with  beasts which must be man-eating killers and how the wonderful authorities have the wisdom to put so much time, effort and funds into solving this terrifying problem.

Why have dogs become such a contentious issue?

Dogs don’t hate like humans, they don’t litter like humans, they are far more loving than most humans can even imagine, they assist in wars, locating bombs, drugs, lost individuals, challenged individuals, they create a great deal of employment (including Sue Hughes and Coastal Animal Services), dogs visit seniors and give them a smile and a kiss, they have a zest for life, love to sniff, explore and run.

Anyone who has not loved or been loved by a dog has no idea how beautiful their souls are and missed out on a wonderful experience.

Yes, the city has thrown dog owners a few bones with their off-leash parks. Some are inaccessible for many, most folks must drive to these ‘wonderful’ sites, not all are able.

Why do non-dog owners have more rights than dog-owners? Why can’t everyone use the parks in their neighbourhood if they desire and allow their pets to be free?

Why can’t the parks have designated times in the summer, that way everyone gets to use the facilities.?

Will dog owners receive a tax refund for the parks they are not allowed to walk free? Off-leash are not asking for exclusive accessibility, as are the opposition.

It was also reported there are some 6,000 or so licensed dogs,  The information I received from city hall was 20,000 licensed dogs.

It is a heart-breaking situation for pets that are deprived of some form of free running. For folks who disagree with off-leash time, how would you enjoy being constantly leashed?

Get a dog, experience the love. Let everyone enjoy their lives.
