Citizens care about downtown parks

Re: Keep parkland public property, Editorial, Aug. 14.

As a daily walker of the seawall, I am very concerned about leasing Georgia Park. Coun. Fred Pattje believes the city could lose control of what happens with that section of the park no matter how flowery the wording. He is right. Also, he is right, reminding us of a previous city council that was prepared to give a portion of Maffeo Sutton Park to the conference centre hotel developer. Luckily they were able to undo that.

More people and vistors and events use this area, more then any part of the city. Why does city council continue wanting to give parkland away to private developers? What are they thinking?

ln 1970, Maffeo Sutton Park was protected for public use in perpetuity. lt was purposed for a marina, boat sheds and repair shops. A concerned citizens’ committee was formed. With their hard work they gathered 4,197 petitioners against that development. Thank goodness they won that fight. I would be very interested in their thoughts on this matter.
