Cell tower should wait until it’s proven safe

To the Editor,

Re: Cell coverage upgrades needed, Letters, Feb. 15.

Telus is planning to place a 46-metre cellphone tower on the land adjacent to the sewage treatment plant on Hammond Bay Road. This is approximately 200 metres from Hammond Bay Elementary School.

The jury is still out on the potential damaging effects of these tower emissions on children and the public in general. The unsightliness of this tower, although an issue, is secondary to the potential damaging effects that these towers can have on our children.

Other communities have shut down plans to have similar towers placed in their communities. Cities around the world are putting the brakes on issuing permits for building these towers.

I am a cellphone user and have always dealt with the small dead zone issue along this stretch of Hammond Bay Road as a small inconvenience compared to the deadly potential these towers may have on people.

Wait for proof that they actually are safe. I am a taxpayer and am completely opposed to the construction of this tower.
