Beefs & Bouquets, March 31

Submit your beef or bouquet by e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com

A lovely thank you to the young gentleman handing out roses to lucky customers at Save-On-Foods. You really made my day.

Two thumbs up to Shoppers Drug Mart for installing bike racks in front of the store at their new Mary Ellen Drive location. It was only a short while after cyclists made this request that it was fulfilled. At a time of growing awareness about how petroleum dependence leads us to trade with despots, it’s a wise business that seeks customers who are “self-propelled” people.

Bouquets and Congratulations to Chantal on your graduation from Tru Spa Institute. Best wishes on your new venture.

A deliciously fragrant bouquet of bright yellow daffodils to the hundreds of caring and loving people living here on fantasy island. We truly have an abundance of blessings in our lives – living here is just one of them. My heart and prayers go to the more unfortunate people in places like Japan and Haiti. As far as beefs go, I really cannot think of any. When I put things in perspective, I’m so grateful and beefs have no place in my thoughts.

A lovely bouquet of daffodils to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s emergency department for having volunteers greeting people at the front door.   Not only did she meet everyone with a smile, she calmed me down and comforted me. Thank you to the Friday afternoon lady and emergency department staff.

A big bouquet of roses to Rose for all her diligent work in the Nanaimo Stroke Recovery Club at Bowen Park Social Centre and for her hospital visits to assist stroke survivors. How lucky we are to have genuinely caring people like Rose in our city.

A doggie bouquet to the gentleman who attempted to control his two big friendly black dogs in Cinnabar Valley recently. My dog responds in the same manner when leashed as he can sense my apprehension/fear via the leash. Not your dogs’ fault but my stupidity.

A beautiful field of Monet flowers to the vibrant arts community in Nanaimo, especially to Crimson Coast Dance Society and Body Cru for bringing Panj Bangra to town. We need more cultural dance events.

Huge Thank yous for the amazing help I received from people when my vehicle broke down recently – the young man who lent me his cellphone, the prompt service of BCAA and Mid Island Towing, a friend’s willingness to pick me up despite a busy day, and the young lady at a Budget rental car location who stayed open so I could get a rental.

A Huge Bouquet to all the people at Neck Point Park who helped and supported me when my boxer Tessa had her heart attack recently. It was all very traumatic but she is doing better now. You are all angels and I am deeply grateful.

A high-definition bouquet to Pat from Shaw who, after going above and beyond to try to get wireless Internet service working on my antiquated laptop, refused to give up and had technical support look into the issue and call me the next day to fix it. It is refreshing to know that caring, dedicated people who provide excellent customer service aren’t as obsolete as my laptop.

Thank You for the beautiful bouquet from Turley’s Florist I won through my submission to the News Bulletin’s Beefs and Bouquets section. What a nice surprise.

A huge bouquet of pink roses and carnations to Julie and her staff at Coco Cabana Tanning Salon. Your cleanliness and your ever-friendly, welcoming attitude makes us feel like family.

a High Five to Coun. Bill Bestwick for getting back to me on constituency matters numerous times. He always returns my phone call promptly. He is the only city councillor who does that.

A happy retirement to Dr. Les Bradley. Thank you for being such a patient, caring and understanding doctor all these years to your many patients and their families. Hope you can enjoy the things you haven’t been able to do and get lots of time to play with your grandchildren. You will be missed by all you touched.

A huge bouquet to the owner of New York Style Pizza restaurant in Nanaimo. While enjoying our lunch, he came in and informed me that my parked truck had rolled back into his. We discovered that I put a small dent in his front bumper and broke his licence plate holder. He was not only very gracious and understanding, but he also said not to worry about the damage. The food was excellent, too – a big thumbs up to this restaurant.

a Bouquet of kitchen delight to the Pro Pacific Restoration crew that turned my kitchen disaster into a kitchen treasure.

Sincere sympathies to occupants of a Vancouver Avenue condo/apartment shrouded in blue plastic covering. Hope you have a clear view outside soon.

A thank you bouquet to all those caring people who telephoned to express their concern for our daughter’s safety in Japan during the recent earthquake and tsunami there.

A belated bouquet and a huge thank you to the kind, generous person or people who had a grocery order delivered to our door for Christmas anonymously. What a surprise and a blessing. You still haven’t fessed up.

A wake-up beef to employers. I am looking for work and hear the same story from many who are over 40 and have been passed over time and time again for interviews even though their skills suggest they could do the job with their eyes closed. Maybe we are approaching this all wrong by getting frustrated – the answer is in your feet and your wallet. For every business who passes you over, strike that store off your shopping list.

A Beef to the car dealership that won’t back the product they sell. Four transmissions later and we still have the problem.

A beef to the lady who yelled into our store demanding that her son use our washroom. When told that we didn’t have one, you rudely snapped back, “Since when?” We have never had one and have to use the public washrooms ourselves.

A beef to the gentleman driving a brown truck who dumped his home and yard waste on Biggs Road. The illegal dumping that goes on in and around this city is out of control and when I see someone doing what you were doing, it’s my business. City of Nanaimo and Regional District of Nanaimo – please do something.

A beef to the gentlemen at a house in a south Nanaimo neighbourhood who block people’s driveways with their cars.

a beef to the man who took the only disabled parking space available at the Parksville bottle return depot recently. I am sure your teenage son was impressed that his young, fit dad would not walk the 20 extra feet to park where the rest of us do. The disabled sign on your rearview mirror must belong to someone who actually deserves it, certainly not to you.

A beef to the health professional I met with recently. There is no need to be rude, judgmental and dismissive to me and then overly kind to the next patient. I may have piercings and coloured hair, but that does not give you the right to treat me so unfairly.
